Exploiting Bottlenecks for effective CCTV Security

When considering the positioning of cameras as part of a CCTV strategy it is important that these are sited where they will be most effective. Bottlenecks or choke points are areas where the target subject, be it a car or people, come past a narrowing area. A doorway or gateway are examples of such bottlenecks. As an example – if in a restaurant there are only two exits, the main public one and an emergency/staff one, these exits can be considered choke points. Anyone who enters or exits the premises normally will have to pass these points. Having established where the chokepoints are they lend themselves very well as locations to cover with identification cameras. Having covered the bottlenecks consideration should also be given to other areas that may be vulnerable. Customers and staff may always enter one of the two bottlenecks mentioned in the example above but that does not mean that a cat burglar will not come in the window to avoid them.
