The House of Commons reaches a consensus that Great Britain needs more CCTV Cameras

Philip Davies (Conservative Party MP from Shipley): Does the Minister accept that CCTV evidence was crucial in eventually bringing Levi Bellfield to justice for the murder of Milly Dowler, and is that not a timely reminder that we should be making it easier, not harder, for the police to use CCTV and that we need more CCTV, not less? On Monday, 27^th of June 2011, there was a lengthy debate in the House of Commons, which resonated consensus on the use of more well installed CCTV systems across Britain. The debate was stirred in the direction of reduction of red tape, to install CCTV cameras more quickly, if required by local councils.

John Woodcock (Labour Party MP from Cumbria): May I respectfully suggest that the Minister should visit the Furness area, so that he can see for himself the impact such cameras make in reducing crime, and to inform the House why 11 pieces of red tape have to be gone through before anyone can even consider installing fresh ones? It was debated and agreed that there is enough statistics which substantiates the fact that CCTV is key in reducing crime, bringing criminals to justice or to secure our high streets, businesses and homes.

There is concern though that our society might be turning into an over scrutinized, Big Brother society. But it is better to be safe than sorry. Everyone has the right to live in Britain with a sense of security in their hearts, each day at work, after work, on the road, at home or on holiday. We need to keep our country secure and CCTV is the only way forward.

In our experience (CCTV Camera London) we have found that there is need to educate more people, politicians and parties, so that they can appreciate the real value of CCTV and should be aiding faster installation of CCTV units across the country, instead of becoming a hindrance.
